Emmy Predictions 2012: Comedy

The Emmy Awards are this Sunday. And for those of you that don't watch nearly as much TV as I do but want to have an informed opinion here are who I think will win the awards. First up lets talk about the comedies.

SUPPORTING COMEDY ACTOR

Usually what happens is when several actors from the same show compete in the same category they steal each others votes.  In this case it allows voters to see more scenes from those actors who may only submit one episode each. This hurts Max Greenfield the most as Schmidt in New Girl steals literally every show and is the main reason this show is any kind of good. What hurts the most about this category is not seeing Nick Offerman's Ron Swanson here from Parks and Recreation, he should win this category easy but can't even get nominated because for some reason Jesse Ferguson keeps getting on the ballot. In the end it should come down to Ed O' Neil who is somehow still Emmy-less and Ty Burrell who won last year. Burrell really is the lead character on the show but because the show is an ensemble piece everyone submits in the supporting category. O'Neill submitted his episodes with the most heart, while Burrell was outright funny in his and for that reason I think Burrell will win.

This could be the toughest category where really four of the six could win.  You can toss out Merritt Wever immediately mostly because the other women are so strong.  Mayiam Bialik started out as a guest star and is now considered a series regular, and while the episode she submitted involving a tiara is actually funny, she is still not in the episode all that much. The same is the case for Kathryn Joosten who passed away earlier this year, she has won Emmys before but it has never been in this category, but unfortunately Emmy voters usually don't get too sentimental.  It seems like it could come down to the reigning champion Julie Bowen and Krieten Wiig in her SNL swan song.   Kristen Wiig helped elevate SNL to new heights and when we look back I inagine her name will be one we remember, but the episode gets kind of sappy and her graduation moment with Mick Jagger is an average moment.  Where as once again Julie Bowen is outright funny.  If I had to pick one I would say Julie Bowen will win, but don't be surprised if Wiig walks away with the award.

Forget the rest this is a two man race.  It is down to Jim Parsons and Louis C.K. and god does "Louie" deserve it.  This may be one of the smartest comedies out there.  For those still shying away, I understand, it can be an uncomfortable show to watch, sometimes there isn't one funny moment in the episode.  The show stands on its own and is just great television.  For those of you who have Netflix I encourage you to go back and watch this series.  He deserves this win for this show, since it somehow didn't get nominated as best series.  That being said I'm sure somehow Jim Parsons will win for "The Big Bang Theory" because people like stupid things.  That's not true, its not all stupid I just don't find this show funny and am amazed when people do, it does have its bright spots and like every Chuck Lorre show he finds fantastic actors to deliver his one or two funny lines in the episode which rely on snark and being loud. On the flip side at least Parsons is playing someone else unlike Louie who is playing a version of himself, and no actor has ever won for playing themselves.  For being a show about science there are a lot of smarter shows out there than "The Big Bang Theory," such as "Louie."  But the better actor is probably Jim Parsons because he is, you know, acting.

HOW HAS AMY POEHLER NEVER WON.  A writer, a supporting actress on SNL and now as lead in "Parks and Recreation."  She has deserved it ten times over, and got upset by Melissa McCarthy last year when she likely won the award more for her performance in "Bridesmaids" than she did for "Mike and Molly."  Zooey Deschanel is irresistibly charming, loved my tons of fans, and the critics all like "New Girl."  Julia Louis Dreyfus could also win as a perennial Emmy favorite and a highly stylized show with "Veep."  But I'm going with my heart on this one, that being said I'm sure it is meant to be broken.

"Modern Family" has won the past three years because the show is charming, heartfelt, family-friendly, and funny to boot.  "Girls" could be a contender in the future but the show has to develop more and was more worried about investing viewers in the characters.  If the actor's contract negotiations had gone on longer that could have left a sour note in people's mouths but it didn't so expect "Modern Family" to win the award again.

Emmy Predictions: Comedy

For those of you that read this blog know I am a movie guy, but come award season I like to show that not only do I watch a lot of movies but I also watch a lot of television. I really need to get out more, but it’s too late for that so for now here are some of my best guesses for how this year's Emmy awards will be handed out. First we'll take a look at the comedy field.

This actually isn't in the comedy field but I think it deserves mentioning just because how impressive it is. Last year I wrote a hell of a piece about why The Daily Show would finally lose. And I stand by it for all of those reasons but to sum it up it wasn't their best year and Conan and Colbert were both ON. Stewart didn't even show up last year which means assumedly he had something more important than getting one of the highest honors for television; already knew what it felt like to win and didn't want to go; or maybe thought the competition was better and more deserving. Well he still won, and now I am convinced if he wasn't going to lose last year he certainly isn't going to lose this year. The Daily Show will win its ninth straight award in this field. How many more years do you think Colbert has before he just loses it and goes postal on his past employer.

This is a tough category to predict. Last year’s winner is this year’s Emmy host and I don’t even know how she is going to do with that, I hope well but it is tough to tell. Last year she was the clear cut winner for her negative slams and one liners, but to end season one they tried to show her evolution and make her a better person. So this season they had to split her time between glee club hater and being sympathetic. The character was at her best when she was mean and awful that is why she won, to give her a heart and redeem no longer makes her the best. While I don’t watch Hot in Cleveland never count out Betty White, she is cute as hell and still hits all her marks. On merit the best performance would have to be Jolie Bowen, she doesn’t get all the laughs but she helps to make all the people around her funnier.

This is going to someone on Modern Family. Jon Cryer basically did a half season of work so how could he get the award, and Ryan Murphy took all the emotion and love that was in Kurt’s character from season one and instead made him a soapbox to send out his message. Any of the other four men could win it, putting Jesse Tyler Ferguson in a distant fourth. Eric Stonestreet won the award last year, but Ed O’Neil and Ty Burrell were better this season. I wouldn’t be surprised if Burrell won but Ed O’Neil is the heart of the series. He wins the award on his first nomination, an award that he deserves.

Is Nurse Jackie a comedy? Do people laugh at that show? Getting past that, I have never enjoyed Raising Hope, so have a tough time pulling for Martha Plimpton. And while Melissa McCarthy was fantastic in the movies she has been good on Mike and Molly but not amazing.Amy Poehler has been fantastic on Parks and Rec. She leads a fantastic cast and shares the spotlight just as much as it shines on herself. She is the one I believe will win, but this is a tough category to predict and may face difficult competition from Laura Linney who not only manages to be funny but in a show that deals with cancer can also be very touching and Emmy voters love that mix.

This may be the biggest lock of the night. There is no chance that Steve Carrell doesn't walk away with this award. That is not to say that he necessarily deserves it for his work this past season. The award would be given to him for the sum of his work over the past seven seasons on the office and his past six nominations. For all of that, mostly the first three seasons and a little bit for seasons four and five, he will win the award. While Carrell deserves it for all that he has done, Louis C.K. has been hilarious all season, watch the masturbation episode and tell me he’s not funniest actor on television right now.

Does Modern Family have what it takes to become the next 30 Rock, well 30 Rock certainly doesn’t. The show is still smart but for the past two years I have enjoyed the first half of NBC’s Thursday line up more than the second half. To that point Parks and Recreation had a fantastic season. While it was upsetting to not get a fall debut last year, by getting pushed back to the spring it allowed the creative staff to fine tune some of the earlier episodes which only made it funnier. Of the nominees this was the funniest show of the year, and I would be willing to wager that this may be the high point for the series because of the extra time they were allotted. The best show of the year though would probably still be Modern Family. The actors on the show are phenomenal as evident by all of the adults being nominated for acting awards. The jokes are good; there are countless laugh out loud moments but the difference may be the rather clichéd ending where the lone voice over tries to wrap everything up into a neat package. The reason this trick has become so clichéd is because it is effective at doing what they need, and that is tying the episode up. The show’s heart and the love the characters have for each other is what give Modern Family the edge.

Emmy Nominations: First Thoughts

The Emmy nominations were just announced today and I would just like to be clear on how I see things, and I think I have always done this post the past several years so why not keep with tradition. All right lets see how it played out.

No surprise that EMMY voters are still crazy about Mad Men and Modern Family. They lead the pack on nominations with 19 for the drama, and an impressive 17 for the family. Last year was probably Mad Men's worse season and they still got all that credit. Once the EMMY voters get something in their heads....

I can't believe how much they got right. The drama category is basically a perfect pick. You could argue that The Killing or The Walking Dead maybe deserved to be there. They both started so strong but then ended on such so-so notes that I am not surprised. And it is about time Friday Night Lights got included even if this week is also the show's series finale. I'm still waiting on Justified,Better late than never. I'm just glad that fan favorite True Blood got left out.

I imagine Treme should have been included on this list, but it wouldn't be a David Simon show without no one watching it during it's original airing and thus getting no credit for its brilliance until several years after its run where everyone slowly wonders how this show didn't get more credit.

I do think we could have left Dexter off this list, as this was not its best season (that was last year's in case you were wondering). What deserved to be on the list was Sons of Anarchy, if for no other reason than show creator Kurt Sutter tweeted: “If we get any Emmy noms I’ll tattoo EMMYS RULE on my ass.” I think we missed out on a great opportunity guys.

How about them comedies. Parks and Recreation finally bust through the mold but man where is the love for Community are you kidding me?!?! Especially this year when 30 Rock was nothing special and on a down year again and with Glee not being the best of anything. The writing was bad and episode to episode there was little to no continuity. Is Glee even a comedy anymore? This Community oversight may be the biggest one of all.

And while I'm glad Community got a little love for their work with Joel McHale getting nominated where is the love for Danny Pudi, or Chevy Chase. You could make an argument for Troy or Annie as well. They have the second best ensemble on television (behind Modern Family) and some of the sharpest writing. All this Community dissing deserves a failing grade for EMMY voters

Seriously how did the entire cast of Modern Family get nominated. They are good, but the entire cast? That is just being selfish. Looking at you Jesse Tyler Ferguson. But a huge ABOUT TIME to Al Bundy who received his first EMMY nomination today.

Why do Emmy nominations matter? It Doesn't. Nick Offerman doesn't need Emmy love to know he is the best supporting actor hands down.

Louie didn't deserve to be nominated for the series, but you better believe Louie C.K. deserved it for his acting. I am actually surprised that EMMY voters got this right. Not only that but in the drama category Timothy Olyphant and his supporting cast has long deserved some love and they finally get it with four acting nominations. About time.

So we are all in agreement that Harry's Law blows right? So why is Kathy Bates getting nominated, just because she is a good actress in general doesn't mean she is good on the show. The nomination probably deserved to go to Kyra Sedgwick who won the award last year but this year isn't even nominated. There is no way the talent went away that fast.

And I am about to lose my head over Sean Bean not getting nominated (see what I did there). Alright maybe I'm not Community mad, but he was the heart and soul of a series that rightfully deserved to be nominated for Best Drama, so where is the love for the acting. And I mean it's not like they can make it up to him next year.

It's a changing of the guard in late night television as Conan and Fallon are in, while Leno and Letterman are out, but where is the love for Jimmy Kimmel. Not that it matters everyone knows Jon Stewart's already overflowing awards trophy is about to get a little heavier.

EMMY Predictions: Comedy

The Emmys are coming up this Sunday so I decided to make some not so bold decisions on who would take home the big awards.

Jon Cryer just may repeat as champion. He has some great lines with Sheen and I love when he does physical comedy. The series hasn't been as funny as usual but Jon Cryer is still hysterical. I actually wish that NPH had won the award last year but sadly it was not to be. The character regressed back to his old form, which is actually for the better, but unfortunately so did the writing style of the show. Barney's chance of winning has come and gone.

Frankly Ferguson doesn't deserve to be on the list, it should be Ed O' Neil. As the straight man in the series, ala he uses a dryer humor, he is not even the funniest part of the episode that he submits for consideration.

Ty Burrell as the father of the nucleus family is fantastic and endearing in the series. While there is no actual lead in the series he may be up there. He feels genuine in his compassion and love for his family and I love his goofy nature. But he is usually outshined, as is the entire cast by the loveable and flamboyant Cam. He is submitting the episode Fizbo which probably is the episode he is known best for but for the voters who have watched the entire series, as I hope most of my readers have, he has some of the best laugh out loud moments of the series. The whole cast is tender so there is no point in pointing out his softer side as that is not what singles him out from the cast and what may eventually give him the win.

But with three members from one show competing for one award it may split the voters. And that is why I love the endearing Christopher Colfer to win the award. Originally he wasn't even supposed to be in the series but after auditioning for the part Ryan Murphy wrote a part specifically for him. Talk about a muse. I love his bitchy attitude towards Lea but the moments that capture him this award is when he confronts his father and his sexuality. Later in the post I will talk about how submitting dramatic moments in this category works against you, I think in this example it works for him. The people voting in this category are very gay friendly and while Eric Stonestreet's character is also gay (as is Fegurson's character and Harris in real life) the story arc rarely deals with the conflict that Colfer faces. He gets to show off an array of emotion and his take on Rose's Turn is fantastic. A well done performance of the song has already bequeathed many actresses gold; Broadway royalty Tyne Daly, Angela Lansbury, Patti LuPone all won for their performances in Gypsy. His performance in this episode should be enough to get this rookie actor his first award.


Please note that the last video I posted of a Glee character was of Mike O' Malley who also deserved an EMMY but was beaten out. So maybe this was a bad idea to post the video but he does it so well.

Full disclosure, I don't watch "The New Adventure of Old Christine" or the "United States of Tara" which may hurt my prediction seeing as Toni Collette won the award last year and is a serious contender this year.

Lea Michele probably doesn't deserve to be on the list as she simply has some work to be done before she is considered the best in her craft. Her character was a riot in the pilot but she submitted the episode Sectionals. And while she does deliver a stand out performance that had Barbara take notice she doesn't show off any of her comedic chops and her dramatic moment aren’t anything spectacular.

With the down year for 30 Rock it may be a tough race to win; she has been better.

In my mind this leaves it down to two actresses with Amy Poehler and Edie Falco. Already an Emmy winner, Edie Falco is the favorite to win which would make her only the second actress to win an Emmy for comedy and for drama. Emmy would love to make this happen and her acting on the show is why the series got nominated for the big award. But my heart belongs to clueless Leslie Knope she is able to bounce off of anyone in the cast and if anyone’s acting or comedic chops deserved to get it nominated for best series it was Parks and Rec. Instead what it got was a spring debut. The series deserves better and that is why I am going with my heart and saying that Poehler comes out with the win.

Someone get Morrison to stop rapping, tell him to stop and never do it again. Larry David has never been known for his acting as much as his writing and this character is probably not too far off from himself but the academy loves the series so he'll get a couple votes. I love Carell and Baldwin both but Baldwin submitted ‘Don Guise, America and Hope’ for his episode and it doesn't come anywhere near as good as past episodes that he has submitted. Carell has been the heart of "The Office" the whole way and has had to do even more heavy lifting ever since Jim and Pam got together but his episode, ‘The Cover Up’, doesn't contain any of those moments of cringe inducing hilarity that I really love about his character. I wish he had submitted Scott's Tots. But sadly it was not to be. Hopefully in his final season he will finally get the award.

This race is down to two men, three time award winner Tony Shalhoub and Jim Parsons of "The Big Bang Theory." The academy is still not entirely behind Big Bang yet which is a shame as the show continually gets funnier and funnier. The episode Parsons submitted is about him accepting award while intoxicated which had me rolling. But working against him is a man who has already won the award and the academy tends to like rewarding strong finales. This was a series that you could pop on and never have to pay too much attention to as it always followed the same formula. It was definitely not one of my favorite series but I really liked the first half of the finale. But Parsons deserved recognition last year and his show deserved to be nominated for best series so I think this will be the validation the whole series deserves.

First things first let’s just scratch "The Office" out of contention. Simply put the series has had better seasons, and while it had a couple of big moment episodes such as the wedding and the pregnancy, the quality that used to be in the series is not quite there anymore

"Nurse Jackie" had a quality season but for a freshman comedy there may be a little too much drama in the series and not enough of a public outcry to be a serious contender. Edie Falco is great but that won’t be enough to win it all, frankly the series should just be glad it got nominated.

"Curb Your Enthusiasm" had quite possibly one of their best seasons ever and if it was ever going to win it would have to be this year. I loved the Seinfeld callback and I thought that Jason Alexander was absolutely hysterical. It however lacks nominations in the writing and directing category and since those are major parts of putting together a best series it would be tough to do, but Curb is definitely the series I am pulling for.

However really this is a three horse race between "Modern Family", "30 Rock", and "Glee." I haven't seen this kind of support for a new show since "Lost" or "American Idol." Simply put it has taken pop culture by storm and is almost as big as those Jersey D-bags. Almost. I love the series, love getting their songs stuck in my head, and am in love with Lea Michelle who has taken over as my celebrity crush. The quality in the series definitely went down after they took their long break. The second half of the season featured episodes that were based around the song, not the song helping to propel the plot. The new structure has also featured a theme which goes back to my last point of choosing the songs over the story, this tactic got annoying. While the male characters were fantastically written from Kurt and his dad to Artie, the women of the show still need a lot more definition. There were some standout episodes in the series such as each finale and the Madonna episode but the producers did not include their six best in the packet they sent to the academy and that may be what costs them.

"30 Rock" is the three time winner and arguably the show to beat as the writing speaks to the business and it is impossible not to love Tina Fey, but much like "The Office" the series has seen better days. Producers this year have selected great episodes to present but on a whole the series definitely took a step back. Even in a down year the show is smarter than a lot of the other garbage on TV but this year it faces a big opponent.

"Modern Family" is a family sitcom with a call back to the days of old with a great twist. All the adults are fantastic in the series with five out of six receiving a nomination in the supporting cast and with Ed O'Neil being one of the biggest snubs of the whole nomination process. The series on a whole is very endearing and you could tell there is serious chemistry between all the actors. Plus the women are smokin hot ala Sofia Vergara, old Happy Gilmore flame Julie Bowen, and of course Cam in a cuddly sort of way. Early on it was considered "Arrested Development" lite which also won the big award in its freshman year. As the show has gotten stronger you see a bigger call back to core family values told in a modern day perspective and I have a feeling older voters will connect with, giving "Modern Family" the edge and the win.

Thoughts on the Emmy picks

The Emmy picks are out. For a complete list, well the lists are everywhere, find it yourself. Here are some of my thoughts.

"Friday Night Lights" gets some love as both the adult leads in Kyle Chandler and the seriously hot Connie Britton both get nominated. Unfortunately it doesn't get any for best series or QB 1.

"Modern Family" deserves all the praise in the world and has a serious shot at dethroning "30 Rock." However, Emmy decided not to give any love to the patriarchal figure of Ed O' Neil who has yet to win the award. I think we could have taken out Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell to put him in the category. I would say have him compete in the lead actor position but I liked that the cast considered themselves a truly ensemble show, which it is.

"Glee" snagged the second most nominations with 19, that is two more than "Mad Men." But does it deserve all the love? I am a regular fan of the show but not because it's all that good, but because it's trashy and addictive (seriously how is "True Blood" nominated for anything). I love the Chris Colfer pick along with his dad Mike O'Malley in the guest spot. The touching acceptance and struggle with Kurt's lifestyle is the best part of the show. Here is Colfer showing off his range vocally and emotionally as he performs his version of Rose's Turn. And don't believe that the same man who hosted GUTS deserves a nomination? "Lost" received 12 nominations for its final season. Good for Matthew Fox and Elizabeth Mitchell, its adorable that Fox now has a reason to show up to this thing.

Team Coco prevails with voters, and rightfully so, as the last 2 weeks or so of Conan's run on The Tonight Show was some of the funniest stuff on television. And lest we forget that the award show will be on NBC this year so that has the potential to be a huge slap in NBC's face. Leno and Letterman are both on the outside looking in as Saturday Night Live also gets in there. Despite not being an election year the show excelled with greatguest hosts. Granted most of the nominations come from episodes featuring Betty White or Tina Fey.

Charlie Sheen really screwed the pooch this year. The show has been nominated the past four years and this year it is left off the list for best comedy. You knew Sheen wouldn't be nominated for best actor but to have the show left off as well is kind of a shocker. I'm actually more surprised that the "Big Bang Theory" wasn't nominated. Critics love this show, I suppose it will have to be enough that Jim Parsons got nominated.

Overall I'm happy with the selections. I wish Cougar Town (bad choice of title ABC) could have got some love. Also I am a huge "Community" fan, most of that ensemble deserves nominations as well. Timothy Olyphant should be on the best actor list for "Justified." FX will never get the love it deserves, just ask "Rescue Me."
